Gas Safety & Hose Maintenance: Pro-Tips
A gas hose is the lifeline of your grill. To ensure a safe, leak-free outdoor cooking season, follow these essential maintenance steps:
1. The 60-Second "Bubble Test"
Every time you reconnect your hose or at the start of the season, perform a leak test:
- Mix equal parts liquid dish soap and water.
- Turn on the gas supply (but leave the grill burners OFF).
- Brush the soapy water onto all brass connections and the length of the hose.
- If you see growing bubbles, there is a leak. Turn off the gas immediately and tighten the connection or replace the hose.
2. Inspect for "Spider Cracks"
Extreme sun and winter freezes can dry out rubber over time. Before the first cook of the year, run your hand along the hose. If the rubber feels brittle or shows tiny "alligator" cracks, it’s time for a replacement. A compromised hose can lead to dangerous pressure drops or gas leaks.
3. Keep the Dust Cap On
The NG12 kit comes with a protective dust cap for the female socket. When your grill is disconnected, always snap the cap shut. This prevents spiders, dirt, and debris from clogging the gas orifice, which is the #1 cause of lighting issues.
4. No "Trip Hazards" or Sharp Bends
While the 12-foot length offers great mobility, avoid stretching the hose to its absolute limit. Ensure there is a slight "slack" to prevent tension on the brass fittings, and never route the hose under the grill where it could touch hot surfaces.
5. When to Replace?
For maximum safety, gas professionals recommend replacing outdoor rubber hoses every 5 to 7 years, even if they look okay on the outside.
